Jan

Here is a photo of me running my 1957 Mercury Mark 30H, as well as my (then) 1 year old son checking it out...

Thanks for the great pictures! I think it is an American thing to have a huge engine and a little suicidal boat in front of it. When the sport was so dangerous it was so much more fun to watch.
I noticed too that you are building some really awesome models with exothic outboards.

Welcome to the forum!

Greetings Jan

The boat is from the early 1990s and was built by Craig Bowman (brand name: Broccoli). It is one of the best handling runabouts I've ever had the pleasure of driving. I sold the Yamato motor a few years ago, but still have the boat and run my Mark 30H on it for fun and at vintage outboard events. Here is an onboard video I took at the Antique Raceboat Regatta in Clayton, NY in 2010. My apologies for the sound - the motor's ignition interfered with the microphone.

Scott, in the beginning when you push down the bow of the boat with your right hand to get it to plane, how do you manage to control the safety throttle and the steering wheel with just one hand? Do you lock the throttle in the high speed notch until the boat is planing?

No - you NEVER lock the throttle while underway. There is a fair amount of friction in the steering system, so I basically point the boat where I want it to go, let go of the steering wheel, and get out over the foredeck to help the boat get out of the hole and on plane. I've also gotten to the point where I can gently turn the boat a bit by shifting my weight left or right if needed. Once on plane, you need both hands firmly gripping the throttle and wheel to keep yourself in the boat and to drive the boat. By drive, I don't mean merely turning the wheel - I mean using your body weight to push the boat around. If the bow comes up from a wave or wake, you push it back down. Runabouts are real drivers boats - LOTS of body movement to keep the boat going as fast as possible. Turns are the most fun as you lean right out over the port side chine to roll the boat up. Here's a video of the same event, taken from shore...

Scott, this video-combination with two different views of the same run is just great! Thank you very much!

It can be seen very clearly, that your boat only runs calmly when on top speed...half speed makes it jump and in the curves it is also quite wild...good to see this, because I was already wondering if my «Miss Grace» which does the same, might have a problem. But now I think I can solve the problem by adjusting tilt an height of the outboard motor and by adding some weight as near to the nose...;)

Yes, the hippity-hoppity nature of the runabout is part of its appeal. Actually, in calmer water, the boat lays out quite nicely, with very little of it in the water, and it carves a turn very smoothly with virtually no bouncing or skidding. Unfortunately, on the St. Lawrence River, calm water is a rarity...
